Belinda Hulin

Biography

It’s genetic. Belinda Hulin was born into a South Louisiana Cajun family and grew up in New Orleans. Before she could walk, she was balanced on her mother’s hip, stirring in pots of gumbo, etouffee and sauce piquant. Once she began to write, it was only natural that much of her best work focused on life’s gastronomic pleasures.

Since the 1980s—when Philadelphia Magazine editors tapped her to write about the nascent Cajun food craze—Hulin has contributed articles on food, dining and entertainment to a wide range of newspapers, magazines and online venues. Currently, she’s tossing pizzas onto the grill and into the oven for The Everything Pizza Cookbook which Adams Media plans to release in 2007. Her first work in the series, The Everything Fondue Party Book, was just released and other cooking tomes are in progress.

Hulin served as food editor of The Florida Times-Union, a 200,000-circulation daily in Jacksonville, Florida, for five years. During that time, she delved into North Florida’s evolving fusion of southern and tropical cooking, winning several Association of Food Journalist awards in the process. Eventually, she was promoted to features editor, where she lead a staff of 18 writers, editors and designers. Food, home entertaining, home decorating, gardening, travel, fashion, arts, culture, popular entertainment and lifestyle trends were among the subjects covered in eight newspaper sections a week.

Throughout her editing career, Hulin continued to write about food. She contributes pieces on cooking and food-based entertaining to Boca Raton Magazine, Water’s Edge Magazine and Mizner’s Dream. She also updated Gayot’s online restaurant guide for Jacksonville, Gainesville, Tallahassee and the Florida Panhandle.

Currently, Hulin is a full-time freelance writer based in Atlantic Beach, Florida. She writes about travel, lifestyle trends, healthcare and home design, in addition to her work on food and entertaining. She is also the editor of Skirt! Magazine’s Jacksonville edition. In that capacity, she keeps in touch with a diverse cross-section of Northeast Florida women, makes public appearances and turns up as a guest on local morning news shows. When she’s not writing, she’s testing recipes. Husband Jim Crissman and children Dylan, 19, and Sophie, 6, are her toughest critics.
